VICTREX™ PEEK CT200: A PAEK Alternative to PCTFE for Cryogenic Applications

VICTREX™ PEEK CT200 is a PAEK (polyaryletherketone) polymer developed by Victrex to address the limitations encountered with PCTFE fluoropolymers in modern cryogenic applications. It was specifically designed to offer better material availability, superior mechanical performance, and increased reliability under dynamic conditions, while maintaining excellent performance at very low temperatures.
With a proven operating range down to –196°C, the CT200 stands out as the go-to solution when cryogenic conditions are combined with mechanical stress, friction, or repeated cycling.

Mechanical and tribological performance in dynamic cryogenics

Unlike PCTFE, VICTREX™ PEEK CT200 stands out for:
  • significantly higher mechanical strength, even at -196°C
  • excellent creep resistance, which is essential for pressure-bearing sealing systems
  • a reduced coefficient of friction, resulting in lower operating torques
  • a higher thermal conductivity, promoting a uniform response to temperature changes
These properties make CT200 a particularly high-performance material for dynamic cryogenic applications, where consistent contact and component durability are critical.

VICTREX™ PEEK CT200 is widely used in industries with high technical requirements, including:
  • Cryogenic valves and valve seats (ball valves, dynamic seals)

When the application is static or primarily focused on chemical barrier, PCTFE may still be a suitable choice. However, for dynamic cryogenic applications, CT200 is a superior technical alternative.
